I made a resolution in January to produce a new piece of music every month this year. As with so many resolutions, it was a miserable failure. Not for lack of trying. I did try. All that I have come up with is an intro that would be good with something but I don’t know what.
So, desperate to be a little productive I worked through a video on mastering music pieces called How to Master a Song by Rob Williams. It succinctly leads you through the steps that you might use to master a song. You would not use all steps all of the time but you would use most steps perhaps most of the time.
Here is a song that I thought I did well but was not very loud or bright and just did not grab me:
Freedom – 14 November 2012, Dance/Electronica. Original
Here is the same song remastered:
Freedom – 14 November 2012, Dance/Electronica – Remastered.
Quite a difference. It is not just louder, it is wider in the stereo field, it has a more traditional analog era smoothness and less muddiness between the vocals and the instruments.
There are many videos on youtube explaining mastering but I like this one a lot and will continue to use the precepts in my work.
